In a heartbreaking turn of events, Nigeria has lost one of its most cherished cultural icons, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72. The revered singer and actress collapsed unexpectedly after delivering a powerful performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration on July 30, 2024.

Despite being rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, medical efforts fell short, and the world was left to mourn her untimely departure.

Eyewitnesses at the party were left in shock, recounting the surreal nature of the tragedy. One observer shared, “It’s incredibly sad. Onyeka Onwenu had just performed with her usual grace and energy, and moments later, she slumped to the ground.

She was quickly taken to the hospital, but sadly, she didn’t make it.” Another guest added, “It felt like a dream. She had just dazzled us on stage, and then to see her collapse so suddenly was overwhelming.”

Born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu’s rise to fame was meteoric. Her distinctive voice and evocative lyrics made her a household name, and she was lovingly dubbed the “Elegant Stallion” for her poise and grace.
