Benin City, Edo State – A three-story building on Ekhator Street in the Ekosodin area of Benin City collapsed during an early morning downpour on Saturday, trapping several students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Ekosodin is an off-campus community that is heavily populated by UNIBEN students. The building’s collapse occurred in this student-dominated neighborhood.

According to eyewitness accounts, the university’s rescue team has managed to pull out some of the trapped occupants, though many of them sustained serious injuries. The injured victims were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

However, one individual remains trapped under the rubble, and the rescue team is continuing its search efforts to locate and rescue this victim, as well as any others who may still be trapped. The trapped victim was reportedly able to call for help from inside the collapsed building.

The Dean of Student Affairs from UNIBEN is on the scene, leading the rescue operations in coordination with the university’s emergency response team. The State Fire Service has also deployed three trucks to assist in the rescue mission.

As of the time of reporting, the university management has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the building collapse or the total number of individuals affected by the incident. Rescue operations are still ongoing.
