In a bid to reposition local government administration in the state, Assembly House Committee on Local Government Affairs, Chieftaincy Affairs, Political Affairs and Rural Development Wednesday in Calabar played host to Heads of Local Governments Administrations (HOLGAs), and other principal officers in exercise of her constitutional responsibilities of oversight as enshrined in section 128 and 129 of Nigeria’s 1999 constitution as amended and Cross River State Law 22 of 2007 which empowers state legislatures to undertake oversight functions.

Addressing the delegation of HOLGAs at Assembly complex Conference room, Hon. Bette Philip Obi, Member Boki 1 State Constituency, Cross River State House of Assembly emphasized that the invitation was aimed at information gathering to checkmate Local Government Administrations for the good of Cross Riverians.

The Boki born parliamentarian employed HOLGAs and other principal officers to be constructive, diligent and transparent while interacting with the House Committee.

Hon. Obi added that knowing the progress report from each local government would enabled for informed opinion and good reportage to appropriate quarters for onward actions. 

On ascertaining the level of infrastructural development in each local government across the state, he explained that physical inspection scheduled to follow suit as agreed with Committee Chairman and other Committee Members would justify paper information.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Eyo Bassey Eyo, representing Bakassi State Constituency stated that by virtue of constitutional provisions, his Committee was mandated to oversee Local Government Administrations in state to set a developmental pace in line with the ‘people First’ mantra of His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu.

He admonished Council administrators to proofer ways of improving her internally generated revenue for even development.

Other Committee Members re-echoed their sentiments on local government as vehicle for rural development.

Dignitaries  present includes, Hon. Eyo Bassey Eyo, Committee Chairman representing Bakassi State Constituency, Hon. Linus Etim, Committee Vice Chairman and Member, Akamkpa 2 State Constituency, Hon. Bette Philip Obi, Member Boki 1 State Constituency, Hon. Ovat Agbor, Member, Obubra 1 State Constituency, Hon. Egbe Abeng Egbe, Member, Obubra 2 State Constituency, Hon. Effiong Ekarika, Calabar South 1 State Constituency, Hon. Bassey Bassey, Member, Akpabuyo State Constituency and Assembly Secretarial staff.

The invite was an occasion for cross fertilization of ideas and exchange of pleasantries underscoring the importance of a worthy working relationship between the Assembly and other sector of economy including local government Administrators in the state.
