Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, is currently in custody at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Headquarters in Abuja, following his dramatic midnight arrest by EFCC operatives, Vanguard reported.

Contrary to earlier claims by his media office that he voluntarily honored the commission’s invitation, sources at the EFCC revealed that Bello was apprehended in Lokoja during a sting operation.

The arrest, which took place at midnight, has sparked widespread interest as the former governor faces accusations related to financial misappropriation during his time in office.

According to an insider familiar with the situation he says

“Yahaya Bello was arrested in Lokoja after being trailed by EFCC operatives and is now being held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.”

Earlier in the day, a statement from Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, indicated that the former governor voluntarily visited the EFCC Headquarters after discussions with his family, legal team, and political associates.

The statement emphasized Bello’s commitment to clearing his name, stating thus

“The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law, chose to honor the EFCC invitation to ensure due process is followed.”

Bello, who governed Kogi State for two terms, has been facing scrutiny over allegations of financial misconduct during his administration.

He, along with some associates, has been charged with money laundering involving over N80 billion.

Despite the mounting allegations, the former governor has maintained his innocence, vowing to cooperate with authorities.

In the statement, Bello’s team underscored his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive, adding that he was the first governor of Kogi State to implement anti-corruption measures aimed at ensuring state resources were used for the people’s benefit.

The statement also highlighted his belief in “placing Nigeria on the path of sustainable development and supporting the fight against corruption.”

Bello arrived at the EFCC Headquarters accompanied by a number of high-profile individuals, with his legal team confident that the Commission will respect his rights as a citizen throughout the investigation.

The public now eagerly awaits further updates on his engagement with EFCC officials as this case continues to unfold.
