Four Seminarians Dead, Nine Injured As Tragedy Strikes Obudu Ranch Resort

A tragic accident claimed the lives of four young seminarians and left nine others injured on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Ikwette community, located near the foot of the renowned Obudu Ranch Resort hill.

The ill-fated vehicle, reportedly conveying thirteen seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Diocese, was descending from the hill after a guided tour led by a Reverend Father when it reportedly suffered a brake failure, leading to the fatal crash just outside the Ranch Resort premises.

Emergency response was swift, with personnel from the Nigerian Army stationed at the Ranch among the first to arrive at the scene. Their prompt action, alongside other first responders, helped rescue the injured and retrieve the bodies of the deceased. The injured victims are currently receiving medical attention.

In an official statement, Nsa Gill, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Cross River State, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as a dark and painful moment not just for the families of the victims, but for the entire state.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. “The state government is already making necessary contacts to reach the families and offer support where needed.”

The victims, whose full identities are yet to be publicly released as at the time of filing this report, had concluded a tour of the Obudu Ranch Resort, one of Nigeria’s top tourist destinations before meeting their tragic fate.

Mr. Gill emphasized that safety remains a top priority at the Ranch and across the state’s tourist locations. He noted that a comprehensive review of safety protocols is underway, especially concerning transportation within and around the resort.

“We urge all visitors to prioritize safety, including ensuring the roadworthiness of their vehicles, and to adhere to all guidelines while coming to and leaving our beautiful attractions,” the statement added.

As investigations into the precise cause of the crash continue, the state government has pledged to provide timely updates and support to the affected families.

The government has also appealed for respect for the privacy of the victims’ families as they mourn their loved ones.
