To ensure full compliance with the NIN-SIM Linkage policy of the federation, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NIN before 14 September, 2024.

According to the Press release signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communication Commission, effective from 15 September, 2024, the NCC expects that no SIM operating in Nigeria will be without a valid NIN as doing so would amount to criminality with attendant penalty for defaulters.

The Commission charges members of the public with incomplete or mismatched NINSIM Linkage to visit their respective service providers with a view to update their details before the expiration dateline or use approved self-service portal for the purpose.

The Commission however warned against the sales and purchase of pre-registered SIMs as doing so would amount to criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and fines.

Recall that in 2020, the federal government introduced a policy to link all subscribers Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NIN) to curb insecurity arising from cybercrimes.

To date, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to a NIN reflecting an impressive compliance rate of 96%, a substantial increase from 69% in January, 2024.

With complete linkage of all SIM cards to NIN, it will enhance the trust and security of Nigeria’s digital economy, strengthen confidence in digital transactions, reduce the risk of fraud and cybercrimes.

Others are, support greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, mobile money services among others.
